Artwork for Sale

Steven Falk is known foremost as an insect illustrator, but has tackled birds and mammals on occasions, and is often inspired by his foreign travels. “Travels in countries like Nepal and China have touched me very deeply and the images that form in my subconscious after I return often prove to be allegorical”. Black and white pen and ink work dominates Steven’s illustrations and shows a great mastery of stippling and cross-hatching – techniques that are not as straightforward as they look, but can capture an amazing variety of textures and tones if executed carefully. Colour work typically involves gouache, and is exceptionally detailed and realistic. Gouache is very opaque allowing finely detailed texture to be imposed on top of darker backgrounds – very useful for feathers and fur. Steven has provided some background notes on the pictures. Can you spot which creature is named after Bill Gates?
